AAP MP Raghav Chadha Petitions Supreme Court Challenging Rajya Sabha Suspension.

AAP MP Raghav Chadha petitions Supreme Court challenging Rajya Sabha suspension.

Raghav Chadha, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP, petitioned the Supreme Court on October 10 to dispute his suspension from the Rajya Sabha.

On August 11, Chadha was suspended from the Upper House of Parliament for “gross violation of rule, misconduct, defiant attitude, and contemptuous conduct.”

The move was taken in response to complaints from four MPs, Sasmit Patra, S Phangnon Konyak, M Thambidurai, and Narhari Amin, who accused him of inserting their names in a motion without their permission. The complaint was filed with Jagdeep Dhankar, Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Chadha allegedly included their names in a motion to form a Select Committee to review the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The AAP-led Delhi government supported the legislation, which was passed in both chambers during the Monsoon session.

Following the suspension, House Leader Piyush Goyal presented a motion requesting action against the AAP MP for allegedly breaking Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business by adding the names of the four MPs without their agreement.

The suspension of Chadha drew censure from the Opposition. “Those members who objected to their names being included in the proposed select committee could have gone to the chairman and told him they didn’t want to be on the parliamentary panel.” “Suspending Raghav Chadha in this manner is wrong,” Congress deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari told news agency PTI.

Previously, on July 24, AAP MP Sanjay Singh was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for “repeatedly violating” the Chair’s directions. The suspension has not yet been lifted.
